There are many valuable reasons for me to choose this film. Learning and gaining knowledge from our course and all the activities and the readings done in class , it has made us fully acknowledged with gender differences prevailing in our society. Today we are in 21st Century but yet there are some gender issues and major problems that are still going on in the society . After undertaking this course of Diversity , we have learned about various existing genders and diversity in gender and how society perceives different genders. “Social construction is an understanding of the world, where individuals encounter social assumptions and stereotypes and these encounters build up various oppression and discrimination such as ethnic differences, power and privilege, class differences and physical disability” (Galbin, 2014). Social Identity a sort of self-distinguishing proof regarding race, ethnicity, sex, sexuality, class, and the encounters of benefit and mistreatment as an individual from social gatherings (Gopaldas, 2013) and social class is having common economic and cultural status in the society.
I personally like this movie as it depicts many major gender issues that are prevailing in an Indian society . The film portrays the life of three women in which they are judged wrongly just because they were hanging out with boys and that too late night. In the movie also it is mentioned that the arms of clock will decide the character of a women which means that if the women is coming late at night , she is not bearing a good and moral character. Also the police is considered to be dominating or privileged part of society and when they took favour of wrong person the whole game was twisted around. I will introduce the social construct of this movie with three aspects : Gender , Social class and microaggressions.
GENDER
Males enjoy much more privileges in personal life and occupation or job as well, and women tend to have lower position than men in the society (Martino, & Pallotta-Chiarolli, 2007 ). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0zCmZ6_wYc. This video demonstrates the inequality on the basis of gender.
The film screens various incidents in which this thing can be easily felt. Firstly, when a police officer ignores the complaint of Minal and giver her an advice that it will be a matter of shame for her and it will just make her life hell. Then another incident was when one of the three female friends was fired from job by his boss. His boss being a male as well as on dominating position in an organization tend to take major decisions on his own. He himself decided that he do not want her to be in office , so he fired her immediately. The status of women in the society is comparatively low as compared to that of men.(Johnson,2017). In this movie females were also judged from their dressing sense and they were being told that this is not how women dresses up . The same thing is mentioned by( Johnson,2017) that the women’s dressing sense or her appearance will be decided by the society.
SOCIAL CLASS
The social class system and the gap in the levels of income, wealth, and power are totally dependent on each other between the upper and lower positions of society(Johnson, 2017 ).
The film reflects social circumstances by showing us the incident when the girl who filed a complaint against the culprit boys, she was suppressed and pressurized not to file a case against them. The culprits belonged to highly influential and political background families so they were roaming free from stress as they were very well aware of the fact that law and police can never do anything to them.There was a financial gap between boys and girls. The girls were not so rich as boys. There were lots of problems for girls due to the gap between rich and the poor . These differences are due to the development of Capitalism in developing countries. (Johnson,2017) also supported this point of differences among rich and poor.
The second incident dealing with social class was the incident when the S.H.O , senior officer of the police department wrote a fake and wrong report of the molestation case and with no fear she arrested Minal instead of arresting culprit boys. She was also free from fear because of her privilege and power as back in India, police is highly influential post and they are never questioned back. (Johnson,2017) also supports that people who are privileged in some sense , they are always powerful than others in the society.
In the movie we have seen various incidents where the women receives micro aggressive comments based on their dressing sense that they should not wear short clothes which provokes boys to molest them . Secondly , when they were given strange looks by the opposition lawyer based on their visit to a hotel for late night party. He was judging her on behalf her going out late at nights. Brookfield, S. (2014) has also mentioned the same thing that microaggressions are present in our day to day conversations and in our routine behaviours like our voice and its tone, our gestures, our eye contact which is intentionally based on insulting an individual.
